The story of the Bruichladdich Distillery is one of betrayal and tragedy. A family torn apart by petty squabbles that in the end turned out to be pointless. The distillery survived countless legal battles, famine, crop droughts and even a smallpox pandemic. After a brief close the distilleries disputes were eventually settled, and the pieces were picked up and rebuilt brick by brick. Grain supplied from the nearby Octomore farm provided the Distillery with a vital ingredient and brought it back to life. The unique tall, narrow necked stills produced a remarkably unique whisky yield that lends itself quite particular to peated spirits. Eliminating that medicinal undertone that most peated spirits take on, the whisky was able to speak for itself and carry the classic Islay flavour to a new level. What started out as a whacky idea over a philosophical discussion gave birth to the worlds most peated whisky brand and to this day still holds that coveted tittle.
Distilled from Scotch Barley in 2013, Octomore 10.1 is the benchmark of the 10s series. Deliberately stripped back to an ex-American oak maturation, aged just 5 years old, the .1 edition exposes the structure and presence of the Octomore spirit. Combining smoke with a modest maturation, this 10.1 first and foremost demonstrates the true potential of a considered, patient distillation.
OCTOMORE 11.1 (Australian release)
Exposing the structural of pure unadulterated Octomore super heavy peated spirit, the 11.1 edition is powerful, understated and vibrant. Underpinned with a delicate balance of smoke and sweet vanilla from the ex-American oak casks, this single malt has spent just 5 years in contact with fresh first fill wood. The presence of peat on the pallet is huge and yet is incredibly balanced with clean fruit and floral notes Distilled in 2014 from the 2013 harvest of 100% Scottish Barley then filled into active ex-American oak, this high provenance high peat single malt is a fitting embodiment of how ingredients demand less time to reach maturity.
OCTOMORE 10Y 3rd Edition
The third release of 10 year old Octomore single malt from Bruichladdich – what a treat! This heavily peated expression was drawn from a variety of casks, and the Bruichladdich folks on the Isle of Islay are more than happy to divulge into the details. 37% of the whisky was fully aged in first-fill Port pipes, 31% in first-fill Cognac casks and 20% in second-fill American whiskey casks. The remaining 12% was initially aged in American whiskey casks, then in virgin oak casks, and then back in to more American whiskey casks. The spirit itself was malted to 167 PPM, so expect a familiar helping of powerful smoke.
OCTOMORE 10 YEAR 2020 (Australian release)
Sitting alongside its 11s series counterparts, this 10 year old brings a subtler, more mature dimension to the otherwise youthfull exuberance of the 1, 2 and 3 spirits. While the team at the Bruichladdich Distillery deliberately keep the barley influence forward in the 1, 2 and 3 editions, the 2 and ten year old editions introduce cask influence at varying ends of the octomore age spectrum. While the malt for the Ten year old is initially higher in PPM, the influence of those 5 extra years results in a clamer, deeper spirit.
Comparing Octomore 11.1 and 11.3 gives one of our finest lessons in stratospheric smoke and barley terroir. While both editions are malted to a Brobdingnagian 100+PPM reading, the differences in barley character from the respective growing region is ever present. Our Octomore Islay barley is grown each year by friend and farmer James Brown, on Octomore farm itself. It is harvested, malted and distilled separately, even from our other Islay barley harvests, in order to become a single field, single vintage single malt.
